Jura
Wines from this region in France are among the most unusual in circulation, made from obscure grapes and offering unexpected flavours.
The Poulsard grape makes vivacious, rose-scented reds. Chardonnay is the region’s most planted grape variety and a certain amount of light Pinot Noir is made, both of them contributing to some great-value fizz. Trousseau’s deeper red wines offer an intriguing combination of pepper and violet aromas.
However the most exciting of wines are the Savagnin Blanc, which is identical to the heady Traminer, this varietal can make an extremely tense, long-lived, full-bodied dry white wine, with some of these wines being consciously oxidised to give them a yellow colour.
