The Macallan Red Collection
The Macallan launched The Red Collection in October 2020 with six single malts of exceptional age, from forty years to seventy-eight. The colour runs back through the distillery's own history: the surname of its founder Alexander Reid, the Choice Old range released in 1903, and the red ribbon Allan Shiach tied to vintage bottles in the 1980s. Each bottle is presented in an oak box made by hand in the UK from the same European oak the distillery uses for its casks, upholstered in leather from Bridge of Weir, and the range has carried illustrations by the Spanish painter Javi Aznarez since it began.
The collection is not a closed set, and this is the thing most often misunderstood about it. The forty, fifty and sixty year olds are ongoing expressions: The Macallan returns to them, drawing new bottlings from different casks in later years. The high-aged whiskies appear once each — the 71, 74 and 78 that opened the range in 2020, then the 77 in 2022, the 73 in 2024 and the 79 in 2025. So the same age statement can exist as more than one whisky.
Forty Years Old has been released in 2020, 2023 and 2025; Fifty Years Old in 2020 and 2025; Sixty Years Old in 2020 and 2024. That makes thirteen distinct bottlings across nine age statements.
Every bottle carries its bottle number and the year it was bottled on the front label, and no two releases have been bottled at the same strength. Both together identify a bottle exactly. For that reason each listing here names its release year, and the strength shown is the one printed on that year's label.
The Macallan does not publish how many bottles of each age statement were made, so no outturn is stated on these pages. Prices on application.
