Glenlivet 40YO

The oldest whisky in The Glenlivet's permanent range, introduced in 2025 after the distillery's 200th anniversary year, and finished in casks seasoned with a bespoke blend of oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry. Cask master Kevin Balmforth: "It's thanks to the efforts and foresight of my predecessors who laid down the foundation of this whisky 40 years ago." Bottled at cask strength, at US$6,000 on release. The bottle draws on The Glenlivet's original 200-year-old silhouette and sits in a copper-coloured case referencing the distillery's stills.

The Glenlivet's tasting notes: strawberry jam, raisins and dark cherries with cinnamon, nutmeg and toasted oak; poached plums, charred orange, dark chocolate, braised red apples and sweet liquorice; a long, sweet finish with warming spice.

Producer profile
George Smith had been distilling illegally in Glenlivet before the Excise Act made a licence possible. He took the first one in the parish, in 1824. What he made was different from his neighbours: a lighter, fruitier spirit than the regional norm, and it has stayed that way.
