The fourth folio, drawn from “Macallan — a strathspey of singular sprightliness”: an advertisement carrying a strathspey composed by the fiddler James Scott Skinner, who it says was moved to music by a tumbler of his favourite malt. It was the first musical notation printed in a British newspaper.

Its character rests on a narrow set of choices held to over generations: curiously small stills, a notably narrow spirit cut, and sherry-seasoned oak the distillery controls closely
