One of the six that opened The Red Collection in October 2020. Fifty years in hand-picked oak, at 45.1%, in the colour the distillery records as Vintage Oak. The red runs back through The Macallan's own history — the surname of its founder Alexander Reid, the Choice Old range of 1903, and the red ribbon Allan Shiach tied to vintage bottles in the 1980s. It was £37,500 on release. The oak presentation box is made by hand in the UK from the same European oak the distillery uses for its casks, upholstered in leather from Bridge of Weir.

The Macallan has distilled single malt on the Easter Elchies estate in Speyside since 1824, under one of the first licences granted after the Excise Act. Its character rests on a narrow set of choices held to over generations: curiously small stills, a notably narrow spirit cut, and sherry-seasoned oak the distillery controls closely — its owner holds a half-share in the Jerez group behind Valdespino, and its casks are coopered and seasoned to the distillery's own specification before any whisky goes near them. That oak gives colour as well as character, from light gold through to deep mahogany.
The older stock, laid down long before single malt commanded serious prices, is the foundation of the releases that now define the top of the category. A Macallan distilled in 1926 and bottled sixty years later, one of twelve carrying a label by the artist Valerio Adami, sold at Sotheby's in 2023 for £2.19 million.
Fine & Rare is where that standing was built — single-vintage bottlings reaching back to 1926. The Reach, distilled in 1940 and released in 2022 at eighty-one years old, was the oldest whisky the distillery had ever bottled until Time : Space followed at eighty-four. The presentation sets have become collections in their own right: the Red Collection's six ultra-aged bottles made £756,400 together in 2020, the Lalique Six Pillars decanters $600,000 in 2022.
