The Macallan Golden Age of Travel: The Aeroplane

The second release, and the first to leave the water. Distilled in 1937 and first bottled in 1972 at thirty-five years old, the whisky was re-presented in 2016 in a Lalique decanter drawn from the era when commercial flight was still an occasion rather than a commodity.

The Golden Age of Travel is a five-part series released by The Macallan in partnership with Lalique between 2015 and 2019, each expression presented in a Lalique crystal decanter evoking one mode of 1930s travel — sea, air, rail, road, and finally the airship. Each decanter is housed in a leather presentation case made by Piñavall of Ubrique, Spain, built in the manner of a period travel trunk. The series was sold exclusively through global travel retail and The Macallan's own boutiques.

The Macallan has distilled single malt at Easter Elchies on Speyside since 1824. Its reputation rests on an unusually narrow set of choices held to over generations: small copper stills, a deliberately tight cut from the spirit run, and a commitment to sherry-seasoned oak that the distillery manages from the forests of northern Spain through to the cooperage. Little of what makes a Macallan is left to chance, and almost none of it is quick. The distillery's older stock, laid down long before single malt commanded serious prices, is the foundation of the releases that now define the top of the category.
