The Macallan Golden Age of Travel

The Golden Age of Travel is a series of 5 decanters released by The Macallan with Lalique, one a year from 2015 to 2019, drawn from the first era of international travel by road, rail, sea and air. 50 individually numbered decanters were made of each, cased in leather by Piñavall of Ubrique in the manner of a period travel trunk, and released through global travel retail and The Macallan's boutiques.

The ages are the thing most often misread. Four of the five were distilled in 1937 and first bottled in the early 1970s — the Ocean Liner at 34 years old in 1971, the Aeroplane at 35 in 1972, the Steam Train at 36 in 1973, the Motor Car at 37 in 1974. The Airship alone dates from 1940, first bottled at 35 in 1975. The age on each decanter is its age at that first bottling, not the time elapsed by the point it reached the Lalique decanter: in every case a further 44 years passed before release.

The Airship announced the end of the series in December 2019, at a launch price of US$50,000, with 48 of its 50 decanters offered for sale and 2 retained for the Macallan and Lalique archives. Cask numbers are not given on the decanters, though The Macallan has described the cask make-up of individual releases. Prices on application.
