The Macallan Golden Age of Travel: The Airship
The release that closed the Golden Age of Travel — five decanters for five ways of travelling in the 1930s: sea, air, rail, road, and finally the airship. Alone among them it was not distilled in 1937; this whisky dates from 1940, first bottled in 1975 at 35 years old. 50 decanters were made, 48 released for sale. The Lalique crystal is etched with an airship, cased in leather by Piñavall of Ubrique in the manner of a period travel trunk. Sold only through travel retail and The Macallan's boutiques, at US$50,000.
The Macallan's tasting notes: smoked oak, orange oil and dried fruits on the nose; dark chocolate, orange and sweet ginger on the palate; a long finish of sweet peat and delicate citrus.

The Macallan has distilled single malt on the Easter Elchies estate in Speyside since 1824, under one of the first licences granted after the Excise Act. Its character rests on a narrow set of choices held to over generations: curiously small stills, a notably narrow spirit cut, and sherry-seasoned oak the distillery controls closely
